| Help with Homework and Library use |

The library is an integral part of SKIP’s mission to promote and provide educational opportunities within the community of El Porvenir. Officially opened in August 2009, the library has already become a very popular place within the SKIP office. The Library is open during the week from 8.30 – 11:30 and 2.30 – 5:30, and the SKIP children are encouraged to come before and after school to get help with homework.
Many of the children visit the library to study or complete their homework. While at the library, children can seek assistance from the volunteers for their various subjects. The volunteers tutor one-on-one, and this type of assistance is very important in improving the children’s educational prospects as often the children do not receive the same level of attention within the normal schooling system. Having international volunteers working in the Library can be particularly useful for the children who study English as they often do not have the opportunity to interact with native English speakers. Also, with the library’s wide selection of educational books, the children are able to access materials they do not have at home. The library aims to create an educational and fun environment for the children. Books in the library are organized by reading level; the books ranging from early primary through secondary school. The library also has bilingual books in English and Spanish in order to provide the opportunity for the younger children to learn new words and the older ones to improve their English. The library is stocked with a wide variety of board games and jigsaw puzzles for children to play with once they have completed their homework.
